UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s state visit to Germany underscores the strengthening bond between these two nations, a relationship that has been cultivated through years of collaboration in political, economic, energy, and cultural spheres. The diplomatic ties between the United Arab Emirates and Germany were officially established in 1972, and since then, their partnership has grown significantly, particularly in the areas of trade and investment. Last year, bilateral trade figures surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), establishing the UAE as Germany’s top trading partner within the Gulf region.
Germany’s presence in the UAE is marked by the operation of approximately 2,000 German companies, including prominent names such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The collaboration between the two countries extends into the energy sector, where both nations have joined forces to tackle challenges related to renewable energy, climate action, decarbonisation, and energy security. A notable milestone in this cooperation occurred in 2022 when the UAE and Germany inked an agreement focused on fortifying energy security and industrial collaboration. This agreement includes provisions for UAE liquefied natural gas supplies to Germany and joint efforts on clean energy initiatives.
The partnership between the UAE and Germany is not limited to economic and energy sectors; it also encompasses research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. Their political relationship was further solidified in 2004 through a strategic partnership agreement, which covers regional security, economic cooperation, and research. This formal elevation of political ties signifies the depth of the collaboration between the two countries.
Despite facing global political and economic uncertainties, the relationship between the UAE and Germany continues to thrive, with both nations committed to expanding their cooperation across various strategic areas. This enduring partnership reflects a mutual understanding and shared goals that have been nurtured over decades, paving the way for future collaborative endeavors in the ever-evolving global landscape.
