The U20 World Wrestling Championships in Bratislava saw Hungary achieving a commendable feat in Greco-Roman wrestling, clinching three medals. László Koppány emerged as a standout performer, securing a silver medal in the 130kg category. His journey to the final was marked by decisive victories over competitors from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, he faced a challenging match against Russia’s Ali Ilyasov, the reigning world and European champion, and concluded the event with a silver after an 8–0 defeat in the gold-medal bout.
Adding to Hungary’s success, Zalán Toplak, representing Ferencváros, earned a bronze medal in the 77kg division. Initially entering the repechage, Toplak demonstrated remarkable prowess by defeating Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili with a commanding 10–2 victory, securing his first-ever World Championship medal. His performance highlighted his potential and marked a significant milestone in his wrestling career.
Petro Zsitovoz contributed further to the medal tally by claiming bronze in the 67kg category. Facing Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelrehim, the U23 world champion, Zsitovoz showcased resilience by overcoming an early deficit to win 11–3 in the placement match. This victory underscored his ability to rebound and perform under pressure, adding another accolade to Hungary’s successful campaign.
The championship commenced with the Greco-Roman wrestling events, where Hungary fielded eight athletes from a delegation of 22 members. Their collective efforts and individual performances at the event reiterated Hungary’s strength and tradition in the discipline, bringing pride and recognition to their wrestling program on the international stage.
