A scorching heatwave that shattered records across Europe this June has inflicted an estimated €2 billion worth of damage on crops, significantly diminishing grain output by approximately 9 million tonnes. This dramatic drop in production has sparked concerns about escalating food prices and threats to regional food security.
Industry assessments reveal that crucial crops like wheat, barley, maize, and oats have been hit hard, resulting in the smallest grain harvest within the European Union and the United Kingdom since 2018. The sweltering temperatures severely disrupted maize during its critical pollination phase and wheat during grain development, leading to reduced yields in several top farming areas.
France is poised to experience the most substantial losses, with maize production expected to decline by around 3.4 million tonnes. Hungary and Spain also face significant setbacks. Across Europe, farmers have reported extensive damage, with some anticipating crop yields to plummet by 50% to 70% due to persistent high temperatures and drought conditions.
In the United Kingdom, extended dry spells during the spring and early summer have similarly impacted crop growth. Farmers have had to commence harvesting earlier than usual and have ramped up irrigation efforts to safeguard the production of fruits, vegetables, and livestock.
The anticipated reduction in harvests is likely to increase Europe’s dependency on imported grains, potentially driving up global grain and food prices. Market analysts caution that continued weather-related disruptions in other major agricultural zones, including drought-stricken areas of the United States, could further strain global food supplies.
