Founded in the United States in 2021, the document workflow automation platform Secro has made significant strides in digitalizing inventory and trade finance since establishing its presence in Switzerland in July 2025. Its innovative technology has been employed in over 48 countries, facilitating the digitalization of $3.5 billion worth of shipments. Secro’s solutions are utilized by six of the top ten largest commodity traders, alongside more than 300 importers, exporters, and logistics service providers. The momentum of this expansion is further propelled by the adoption of Secro’s network by tier-1 European banks.
In a significant development for the commodity operations sector, Crédit Agricole CIB, in October 2025, began using Secro’s proprietary blockchain technology to digitalize its transactional commodity operations. The partnership achieved a milestone with the successful execution of the bank’s first digital commercial operation in the energy sector, involving a major global trader. This operation marked the issuance of a digital document of title by the vessel master while at sea, which was then rapidly transferred to the shipper, and subsequently received by Crédit Agricole CIB in its Secro digital vault. This process allowed the bank to maintain secure control over the original document during the voyage, endorsing it digitally to the final consignee upon settlement. This transaction has set the stage for a steady increase in digital shipments, proving the viability of digital negotiable instruments within the sophisticated Swiss commodity trading industry.
Further validation of Secro’s impact came as ING joined the platform in early 2026, following Crédit Agricole CIB’s lead. Known for its pioneering role in digitization within the commodity finance sector, ING is expanding the use of tokenization technology across its client portfolio to optimize trade finance operations. The Dutch bank’s Swiss branch is also testing the applicability of Secro’s technology for inventory financing, potentially becoming the first bank to tokenize documents of title across the entire commodity finance value chain. With multiple launch customers and other banks in the onboarding process, Secro is creating a network effect that addresses the major challenge of digital trade: ensuring end-to-end connectivity and interoperability among exporters, logistics providers, traders, and banks.
Secro strategically chose Switzerland as its European headquarters in 2025, benefiting from the country’s robust legal framework for digital ledger-based securities under the Distributed Ledger Technology Act. Positioned in Zurich, Secro offers unparalleled data protection and full compliance with various digital trade frameworks, including the UK’s ETDA, Singapore’s ETA, and other MLETR-compliant laws. This ensures that negotiable instruments on Secro’s platform are legally recognized worldwide. The platform boasts several advantages, such as reduced transactional risk, increased legal robustness, faster operational velocity, and improved liquidity.
With its internationally patented tokenization technology, Secro has established itself as a standard-bearer for trade digitalization. Recognized by major marine insurers and the International Chamber of Commerce, Secro is SOC2-type 2 and ISO 27001 certified. These credentials underscore its commitment to providing compliant and reliable digital solutions for the global trade industry, positioning it as a leader in the transition towards digital commerce.
