In a move to address the growing presence of artificial intelligence in the music industry, Spotify is set to implement new strategies aimed at identifying and managing AI-generated artists on its platform. Starting in September, artist profiles and track listings that are AI-created will feature an “AI persona” label, distinguishing them from human artists. This initiative is designed to help users easily differentiate between authentic musicians and those crafted by AI technology, while simultaneously safeguarding the visibility of real performers.
The streaming giant’s decision arrives amid a rapid increase in AI-generated music. By default, AI personas will be excluded from users’ personalized recommendations, a step intended to maintain the focus on genuine musical talent. Artists will have the option to voluntarily disclose their AI-generated status; however, Spotify plans to bolster this system with a combination of human reviewers and AI-driven tools to identify any AI personas that might not be self-reported.
Highlighting the scale of the issue, Spotify previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over the course of a year, underscoring the influx of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music platforms. This action emphasizes Spotify’s commitment to ensuring the integrity of its music library amidst the evolving landscape of digital music production.
As the prevalence of generative AI in music continues to rise, Spotify acknowledges the growing demand for transparency among listeners. The company believes that audiences increasingly want clarity about whether the creator behind a track is a living artist or a digital creation. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Spotify to adapt to technological advancements while preserving the quality and authenticity of the music experience it offers to its users.
